Have you ever felt the tug of wanting something more out of life? Maybe you’ve been questioning your path, wondering if there’s a deeper purpose meant just for you. Many men in their 30s, 40s or 50s find themselves at this crossroads, driven by a desire not just for financial success but for fulfilment across mind, body, spirit, and emotions. So how do we begin? The journey to discovering your life’s purpose doesn’t need to be long or complicated. In fact, you can start right here, right now.
Step 1: Identify What Makes You Feel Most Alive
First, reflect on moments when you felt completely alive. These experiences don’t need to be tied to your career or finances, and they’re often simple. Maybe it’s hiking in nature, connecting deeply with loved ones, or problem-solving at work. One of my colleagues, for instance, found his passion for creating art after recalling childhood memories of painting. This is about connecting with the energy that lifts you up.
As Brendon Burchard puts it, “We are blessed to be living in the freest of free societies where dreams can be realized on extraordinary levels.” The problem is that most of us live by habit, not by choice. So, step out of reaction mode and start choosing what invigorates you.
Step 2: Consider Your Natural Strengths
Your purpose is often aligned with what you’re naturally good at. What are those activities you excel in without much effort? Think about the skills others often commend you for or the tasks you enjoy that feel easy to you. This doesn’t mean you need to be a master from day one. Many of us undervalue our gifts, not realizing that our unique perspective could be just what someone else needs.
If you’ve ever felt self-doubt creeping in, recognize that this is a normal part of the process. When we push ourselves towards a higher vision, old fears will rise. Challenge these fears by writing down your strengths and gifts—make it a reminder of what you bring to the world.
Step 3: Reflect on the Impact You Want to Have
Purpose expands beyond self. Ask yourself how your passions and talents can serve others. Dan Lok, a successful entrepreneur and mentor, emphasises that the most fulfilled people are those who know they’re contributing positively to the lives of others. Maybe you’re driven by teaching, building something lasting, or simply showing up as a role model in your family.
One of the concepts I share with clients is to view your talents as tools not only for personal gain but also for creating positive ripple effects in your community. There is a particular satisfaction that comes from knowing your presence in the world makes a difference.
Step 4: Notice Patterns
When you’ve reflected on these areas, look for patterns. These are clues that can help you define a purpose aligned with who you truly are. Many people discover that they’re drawn repeatedly to activities that allow them to connect deeply with people, while others find themselves in roles where they create or teach. As T. Harv Eker says, “How you do anything is how you do everything”—so notice where you naturally direct your energy.
Step 5: Write a Purpose Statement
Writing a purpose statement may seem daunting, but it’s just a concise description that captures what makes you come alive, your unique talents, and how you want to serve. Here’s a formula you might find helpful:
“I am here to [what makes you feel alive] using my [natural strengths], in order to [the impact you want to have].”
For example: “I am here to inspire and guide others through storytelling and teaching, helping them discover the courage to pursue their dreams.”
Writing your purpose is a powerful act. Research shows that writing down goals makes us significantly more likely to achieve them, as it primes our minds to take action. This simple yet profound step reinforces your commitment to the journey ahead.
Step 6: Visualize Living Your Purpose
Once you’ve identified your purpose, imagine living it fully. This isn’t just daydreaming; visualization helps create mental maps that guide you. Close your eyes, and see yourself in situations where you’re aligned with your purpose. Picture the impact, the joy, and the fulfilment. If a vision feels exciting, hold onto it. If it feels heavy or inauthentic, refine it until it feels like you. This practice is essential because it bridges the gap between where you are and where you want to be.
Step 7: Take One Inspired Action
Now it’s time to act. As Peter Shallard from Commit Action advises, action is what turns vision into reality. You don’t need to make huge leaps right away. Begin by integrating small actions that align with your purpose. For instance, if part of your purpose involves helping others, perhaps you start by mentoring a young colleague or volunteering. The idea is to begin embodying your purpose in ways that feel doable and authentic.
Step 8: Revisit and Refine Your Purpose
Your purpose isn’t set in stone—it evolves as you do. Regularly reflect on what still feels true and what has shifted. As your life experiences expand, so too will your understanding of yourself and your purpose. Adjust it as needed to stay in alignment with who you’re becoming.
Define and Embrace Your Purpose
