The One Principle That Can Redefine Every Relationship You Have

Assume Goodwill, Challenge Assumptions

One of the most profound truths I ever heard was this: assume goodwill, challenge assumptions.

On the surface, it sounds simple. Yet if you lean into it, this idea can transform not only your relationships, but the very architecture of your life.

Consider this: when someone you value sends you a message, do you treat it as an investment? For me, I do. I may not reply instantly, but I reply promptly, intentionally, because that person’s presence matters. It’s not about convenience—it’s about integrity. That small act says, “I see you. I value you.”

Now compare that to someone who routinely takes days to respond, not because of genuine crisis, but because you’ve slipped down their list of priorities. That’s not about busyness. That’s about values.

This is where “assume goodwill” enters. As Sigmas, we lead with generosity. We give the benefit of the doubt, recognising that life throws curveballs. But when a pattern repeats—when days stretch into silence, when promises dissolve into excuses—we must “challenge assumptions.” We must ask: Why am I continuing to invest my energy here?

That question is not harsh. It is sovereign. It is alignment.

Because your energy is sacred. And where you place it reveals the truth of your priorities—and the truth of others’.

Sigmas, this principle isn’t only about friendships or business partners. It’s about the entire ecosystem of your life. Your career. Your investments. Your body. Your spiritual practice. Are you assuming goodwill—showing up, trusting, giving your best? And are you equally challenging assumptions—testing if the return of energy, growth, or alignment is truly there?

To live without this dual awareness is to leak power. To live with it is to become unshakable. You stop chasing connections that ghost your soul. You stop tolerating surface-level returns in relationships, in ventures, in habits. You start discerning where your energy flows and where it withers.

And here’s the beauty: when you practice this, life gets clearer. Faster. Lighter. The people who truly resonate rise into focus. The ventures worth building take root. The clutter falls away. What remains is alignment—relationships, work, and a mission that feeds your spirit instead of draining it.

Sigmas, don’t confuse excuses with truth. Don’t accept delay as respect. And never, ever settle for being low on someone else’s list when you know the depth of what you bring.

Action Step:
Today, choose one relationship, habit, or commitment in your life. Ask: Am I assuming goodwill here, and is that goodwill being reciprocated? If not, it may be time to challenge your assumptions—and redirect your energy to where it truly belongs. Reflect on it, then share it with me or in the comments. Sometimes the act of naming it is the first step to reclaiming your sovereignty.

If you’re ready to stop leaking energy into misaligned relationships and start leading with clarity, let’s talk. This is exactly the work I do with clients—realigning identity, purpose, and power. Book a clarity session today.
